Rediscovering the Art of Listening to Music

Let’s face it, we all know that we should try and relax more. To look after ourselves a bit better. To prioritise our wellbeing a little more rather than running ourselves ragged for everyone else 24/7.

And when asked about what we like to do to relax, most of us will probably mention music as part of it. But are you really using music to its full potential? And how can you relax using music when there’s no such thing as ‘relaxing music’?

In this thought-provoking and fun workshop, Mark Deeks will challenge how you think about, and listen to, music in his own unique style. He’s a piano coach who works as a musical director with choirs but is also in two signed metal bands, so you can assume that your musical preconceptions will go out the window quite quickly. His PhD in heavy metal music (yes, really!) also means you can expect the unexpected!

Come ready not only to listen to music, but also to unlock how you could be relaxing way more than you are with a little musical help.

YOUR HOST FOR THE SESSION

Mark Deeks

Mark works professionally as an online piano coach and musical director, including for his own community choir Sing United. Having played piano since he was 5, and taught music since he was 15, over the last 30 years he has made a habit of breaking expectations, both in terms of what is possible musically and by showing that ANYONE really can play piano. And he’s done almost all of it whilst wearing heavy metal t-shirts.
